The new Rolex Deepsea 136668LB is big and dumb, and we went hands-on with it as soon as humanly possible. Photos by David Bredan. Photos by David Bredan. As mentioned in our coverage of this release, the notion of a 322g, solid 18k Deepsea on a solid 18k gold bracelet is contradictory to much of what we’ve seen from Rolex in the past. I have found anything smaller then 42 mm looks extremely small on my wrist. The watches I have range from 45 to 44 mm so it is perfect for me. I haven't noticed a big difference from my Omega Planet Ocean or Breitling Steelfish .
We take a look at a 2018 Rolex 126660 - the Deepsea Sea-Dweller James Cameron, and decide if we're manly enough to pull it off. (Spoiler alert; we're not!) Rolex slimmed down the bezel ever so slightly to feature the chamfered sapphire crystal. The date window has been upsized by eight percent, resulting in the date itself also being larger. The watch continues to feature a titanium caseback – only .
This watch isn't just heavy, it's BIG – 44mm x 17.7mm of nearly solid gold swagger (swagger I definitely don't have). Those are the same dimensions as the Oystersteel-cased Deepsea ref. 136660 that was released in 2022.After an hour the size is not that noticeable - if I have been wearing another watch the Deep Sea always feels large for a short period of time, but very quickly you find it's not a factor. If anything it's the most comfortable Rolex I have owned.

The bracelet of the new Deepsea (right) no longer protrudes above the lugs compared to its predecessor. Rolex also tinkered with some of the smaller details. the distance between the case and the bezel has been reduced, which limits the amount of dirt that can penetrate into the watch. The Deepsea has always been Rolex’s biggest and boldest dive watch (until the 50mm wide Deepsea Challenge 126067 came along that is, but we’ll ignore that for now). It takes the iconic design codes of the Submariner and beefs it up to 3,900m of water resistance. But the Deepsea Special was too large and too thick, it wasn't mass produced by Rolex. Compared to other Rolex series models, 116660 looks like a giant, but to Deepsea Special, 116660 is much thinner. The 40mm Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600 with its caliber 3135 isn’t as technically advanced as its newer and bigger brother, the Deepsea. And yes, it’s also missing the playful D-blue dial of the Sea-Dweller Deepsea James Cameron version.
